Until recently I thought of cloth nappies as giant handkerchiefs that you put safety pins on just like my mum used to with me. Some families still go down that route but if I am honest that's definitely not something that appeals to me, What I've recently discvered is the new school of cloth nappies. The new style of nappies that look like disposables, new fabrics, and super absorbent pads that are easy to wash in your own washing machine
#1 Saving Money
I have just purchased my starter kit including everything we will need from birth to potty for £195 (that's a saving of £600 if I didn't buy any new prints etc (new post to follow with my stash details)
#2 Health Reasons (Disposables contain lots of chemicals)
This is a widely debated issue but I personally consider cloth to be more healthy for babies because of the natural fibers which allow more airflow than plastic disposables possibly preventing yeast from growing causing urinary tract infections. Most disposables are bleached with Dioxin, which, in animal studies, caused nerve damage, birth defects, increased rates of miscarriages and changes to the immune system. Another is Sodium Polyacrylate, the super absorbent gelling material, or AGM, that allows your baby to go long periods in one diaper. Sodium Polyacrylate has been linked in the past to toxic shock syndrome, as well as allergic reactions, and it’s is potentially lethal to pets.
In this case, the sustainability is both financial and environmental. Any good cloth diaper that’s cared for well can be reused on a second child. And prefolds will easily last through 3-4 children, so the financial savings can be significant and the environmental impact absolutely minimized, even when considering there is extra water and power usage associated with washing and maintaining diapers.
#4 Cloth Nappies are more absorbent.
Providing you use the correct liner then from everything I have read cloth nappies are super absorbent, much better at night time than disposables.
#5 Cloth is more comfortable
I guess this also ties in with the health benefits, I mean would you really want to wear paper underwear all day? Soft cotton next to babies skin is far more appealing and comfortable.
#6 Beautiful designs
Look out for the arrival of little miss' first nappy stash coming in a post soon.....they're adorable!
